Of Mourning – The Gestation of Memory (1919-1932)

After the war ended on 11th November 1918, and the troops came home, a decade-long period of conscious, non-pathological mourning began. Architectural symptoms of the three phases of this mourning period – forgetting, remembering/re-enacting, accepting – can be perceived in the monuments and buildings of the time. In the subsequent narrative of creativity, I mention some of the parallel works in other fields that seem to speak of the same preoccupations.
